Hollywood Half Marathon Weekend

I've decided to do this blog post as a photo journal for a change. Please enjoy the pictures and my lack of blabbering. :o)  If you want to read my review of the race on RunningTrip.com, check it out here.

2012 Goals: Month 3 Review

Its hard to believe that the first quarter of the year has already come and gone! I think this is going to be the fastest year ever with everything that I have going on in life. Busy weeks, busy weekends, followed by more busy weeks, etc. I feel like I fell off track in March with a lot of things but I'm starting to get everything  under control again.

Here are my goals through March by category:

Health
  • Floss regularly: D - I've been going to bed late and have been so tired and lazy I've been skipping flossing most nights.
  • Sleep a minimum of 8 hours per night: F - I've been staying up late to get a million things done and have been getting 4-6 hours of sleep. In the past week I've managed to get 7 hours of sleep though so there is hope for me!
  • Eat more vegetables: A - Veggies/salads with lunch and dinner are a norm now!
  • Eat less processed food: B -I'm back on the crack train of Trader Joe's turkey meatballs, but I'm eating less of the garbage that appears in my office kitchen. (Girl Scout cookies and such)
Fitness
  • Register for less races and focus more on quality training: A - I didn't sign up for any races all through March! Yay me!
  • Incorporate strength training into my routine at least twice a week: F - I've stopped doing strength training all together. I need to get back on it!
  • Bike at least twice a week (once indoors, once outdoors): C - I've stopped riding my indoor trainer during the week and have just been running. I have been keeping up with my weekend long rides though.
  • Do Bikram Yoga at least twice a month: F - Between travel and running and cycling on the weekends I haven't had time to go at all!
  • Run a 3:55 full marathon: TBD
  • Run a 1:45 half marathon: TBD
  • Complete at least one triathlon (preferably Olympic distance): TBD
  • Complete a century ride (100 miles): TBD - I'm attempting a near "metric century" ride this Sunday!

Life
  • Get to work by 8-8:30am regularly (instead of 9am): D - I'm slowly getting better at this.
  • Develop a personal branding statement: TBD
  • Manage my expenses better: B - I'm set up on mint.com now! Love that I have a negative net worth since I no longer own a home (yet I'm still paying off a loan on its loss when it sold) and I have several student loans from my MBA.
  • Attend church regularly: C -I haven't been back since the 2nd week but I've been watching the weekly podcast of the service. I've started to get behind on reading the Message, but hope to catch up this month.
  • Play the piano at least once a week: F - I never have time! I'm making tutus with any free moments I have. This month I will try to play at least once. Just one day!

General
  • Continue to work to improve on everything I do: B - I'm always trying!

My report card for the month - eek, not looking too good!

Ironman 70.3 & Carlsbad 5000

Last weekend I spent a lot of time in North County both volunteering at a race and running a race. I volunteered at the Ironman California Oceanside 70.3 race on Saturday, and then ran the Carlsbad 5000 on Sunday.

Ironman Oceanside
Oceanside, which is about 45 minutes north of San Diego proper, hosts an Ironman branded 70.3 race (aka a half Ironman) every March. I had heard about this race last year and it had crossed my mind to volunteer, but something must have come up and I forgot about it. As this race rolled around this year I contemplated volunteering again, but wasn't sure what role I'd want to fill and was a bit turned off by the long volunteer shifts. I shelved the volunteering idea again until my friend Kathryn asked if i wanted to volunteer with her. Sure! I took her request as a sign.

Ironman Transition Volunteer

We looked at various options based on time commitment, time start, and requirements. I wanted something that didn't start too early (so I could run first) and that wasn't messy or strenuous. I was instantly drawn to  aid stations (handing out water is easy right?) but Kathryn was attracted to the "finish line catcher" position. Um... exhausted and sweaty athletes collapsing in your arms as they cross the finish line? Are you kidding me? I am a major germ freak and didn't want to touch anyone! I mentioned wanting a less hands-off job and Kathryn found another one that seemed hands off and met her requirement of something that showcased the multi-sport aspect of the race .... T2 bike checkout!

With Kathryn at Bag Check

Essentially we'd be making sure that everyone leaving the transition area was taking their own bike out. The bikes are numbered as well as the athlete's helmets and body. Easy right? Look and match numbers? Aka stay clean and read numbers!  I could totally do that! I was excited for the position and was looking forward to race day. On race morning Kathryn ended up getting to the volunteer area first and told me she was actually in bag check not transition, and was helping unload a bag check truck. Hmm okay, no problem. I got there and instantly started helping people unload huge boxes with large bags containing smaller bags with the athletes' gear. We started unloading the "morning clothes" bags which were the dry clothes that the athletes had come in.

Organized Chaos

It seriously seemed like the bags were never ending. We'd unload and arrange a whole section, and then more came. And then more. And then more. I was exhausted and tired and totally unprepared for manual labor. After two hours of unloading bags when I thought the end was near ... the green bags suddenly turned blue. Every athlete had TWO bags for this area. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! We had to do this all over again? I felt bewildered, defeated, worn out, and sad. I didn't have long to wallow though, the bags were coming! We all started working to get this second set of bags out of the trucks and organized. The second bags by the way were WET and dirty since they contained wetsuits and such. Yuck!

Only Had Glimpses of the Racers

Around the time that we started arranging the second bags, we started getting athletes looking for the first AND second bags. Talk about stress! Trying to run around unloading new bags while searching for existing bags was organized chaos. Luckily I love scanning numbers (I was the fastest call number reader at the Stacks Services at the UCSB library in college!) and instantly switched into scanning robot mode. I LOVE organizing and was on a personal mission to help arrange incoming bags while finding outgoing bags.

Todd's Morning Clothes Bag!

Hours of this process ensued and myself and the other dozen or so volunteers were flying around the place. While setting out the bags I saw (well searched for) my friend Todd's bag and assumed I'd see him when he picked up his gear. Sadly I missed him but I did see Nicole and several others I knew doing the race.

Hello Kitty Tri Top???
(So embarrassing I chased this poor guy down
asking about his jersey and if I could take a picture.
Apparently he works at Sanrio!)

Let me just say that working bag check was crazy but fun. I was amazed by how many people picking up their bag made a point to thank us for being there. In their tired and cold state they thanked us! Not just "thanks" for my bag, I heard "thank you for being here" over and over again. I was surprised, flattered, and humbled. I was there to help support them and their awesomeness! Congrats to you! Forget us!

Six hours later I was dead tired. My back hurt from all the physical labor, my feet hurt, I was tired, and I wanted to get home. Almost all of the bags were doled out and I was ready to leave. We checked out with the lead and found out that of the 5000 bags in our area only 15 were missing. Um, the airlines can take note. Very impassive! I headed home to relax and prepare to (drive all the way up there again.. ahh!) for the Carlsbad 5000 the next morning

Todd's race recap here.
Nicole's race recaps here.

Carlsbad 5000
I had never run this race before since the idea of driving 45 minutes to run for 25 minutes before driving 45 minutes home seemed silly to me. It seemed like everyone I knew who ran actually ran this race though, so when an Active Schwaggle came up for it I thought what the heck, for $15 I'll do it!

Representing the SF Marathon!

After working the bag check all day on Saturday though at the Ironman I was really hurting. My back was killing me from bending over and handling the bags non-stop for six hours, and I was just tired and unmotivated. I  really thought about just skipping the race but in the end decided to go and do it.

Another Beautiful Day to Run in San Diego

My division started at 9:23 so I drove up at 8:00, parked, and made my way to the start line. Along the way I was fiddling with my Walkman MP3 player which I had kind of broken a few days earlier. (I had broken one earpiece off a bit and it was loose.) As I fiddled with the earpiece it went from loose to a completely separate broken off piece. Crap. Bye bye Walkman. I stared down at the two pieces in disbelief before sadly throwing them in the garbage and accepting that I'd be ruining this race in silence. Sigh.

Freight Train - Coming Through!

I tried to find Tara at the start line but couldn't spot her in the crowd and before I knew it we were off! I knew my overall pace goal was a little over 7:00 and really tried to resist the urge to go sub 7:00 in the first mile. I started out in the beginning of the pack though and it was hard to hold back.  By the end of the first mile I was hurting .. and bored .. and so missing my music. The course went out from the village to the coast and had a down and back and out and back loop. I HATE out and backs! I get that they did this for crowd support but based on course alone I hated this race. I was hoping for a PR in this course (Trying to beat 22.26) but hadn't prepared with any speed workouts, was running unmotivated without music, and overall wasn't feeling it. Around mile 2 1/2 I gave up a bit and let a few people pass me, but then tried to reel it in at the finish. How can running 3.1 miles be so miserable when I've actually enjoyed the last few times I've ran 26.2??

This Face is Priceless! Worst Race Photo Ever!
(Click on the picture for a better view and notice the guy off to the right!)

As I approached the finish line all I could think about was how happy I was for this crap to be over. I saw in the final stretch that I wasn't going to PR and didn't even care. I just wanted the race to be over!

Official Results
Finish: 22:59
Pace: 7:24
AG: 37/275
Women: 85/1121
Overall: 122:1456

Mile 1 Pace: 6:56
Mile 2 Pace: 7:21
Mile 3 Pace: 7:42
Last 0.1: 6:28

After crossing the finish line I just wanted to go home and finish up with my day. I saw Tara and Ben soon after though and hung out with them for a bit (picture time!) before heading back to my car to drive home. I'm glad I did the race to see what I could do, but was bummed with my performance and the fact that I gave up before it even started when my Walkman broke, and then I totally gave up around mile 2 when my spirit died.

Uh-Oh - Glam Runners Out of Tutu!

Glam Runner Founders Monika & Tara

I really doubt I'd do this race again, but I'm glad that I did it at least once. Its really not worth it for me to drive more than 15 minutes for a 5K, and its stupid for me to race and expect a PR if I havent' been doing speed workouts. Lessons learned!

Carlsbad 5000 Medals for the First 250

Next Up
After the Carlsbad 5000 my next race was the Hollywood Half which was this past weekend, and then this coming weekend I have the Gran Fondo 60 mile bike tour. This will be my first bike race to date and I'm super nervous! I'm hoping that the training I have done is sufficient, especially coupled with my aerobic base thanks to running. Guess we'll see next week! Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Oakland Half Marathon Weekend

Two weeks ago I ran the Oakland Half Marathon as my first half marathon of the year. By this time last year I had run four half marathons, so I'm pretty proud of myself to have made it all the way through the first quarter of the year without having run any! My New Year's resolution to train more and race less is still on track!

Back in August of last year a deal came through Active Schwaggle for  a $35 entry to the Oakland Half Marathon. What an amazing deal! I instantly thought about running it and figured it could be an excuse to go home. I like trying new races and this one was close to San Francisco and had a really flat course.

Love This Quote on the Pace Bracelet

I hesitated for a bit before signing up when I remembered some less than glowing race reviews I had read last year, but brushed those thoughts off since those reviews were for the full course and as I learned running the OC Marathon, the full and half experience can be very different.

Driving up to San Francisco

Mika Was Looking Bored

The Friday before the race David and I packed up the car, loaded in the dogs, and hit the road. We took the 5 the whole way instead of my usual detour on the 101 through Santa Barbara and made it up to San Francisco in 8 hours. Not too bad in my book! We were staying at my dad's for the weekend and soon after getting into San Francisco we met up with my dad at one of my favorite restaurants - Fresca!

Almost There!

One incredible Peruvian dinner later, and we were stuffed and ready for bed. Yep, party crew, rolling in! I had plans to get up early and meet up with the Run 365 San Francisco Marathon training program to do a 6-9 mile run. When I checked the weather I was saddened to see that not only would it be raining that Saturday, but it would be raining on Sunday aka race day as well. Big sigh.

Boo! Bad Weather!

Under normal circumstances I never run in the rain. I have a low tolerance for non-pleasant weather. Why do you think I love San Diego so much? Anyways, I decided that going out in the rain for the training run would break me in for the race the next day. I went down to Sports Basement in the Presidio to meet everyone, and ended up running 9 miles with Jojo and some of the other runners in the program. While I was running with the group I met a fellow Lowellite and friend of a friend. Its such a small world!

Gloomy Morning in the Presidio

Jojo Threatened my Life if I Posted This Picture
So I Cornified Her :)

After the cold and wet training run David and I headed straight across the bridge to Oakland.  Hey, might as well right? We were a lot closer coming from the Presidio than my neighborhood. The expo was being held at a Marriott downtown which meant guess what? Easy parking! My favorite! We were in and out of the expo pretty quickly, and soon were heading back across the bridge to go home so I could finally change out of my sweaty and wet running clothes. Running in the rain and then not showering for hours is not fun. I felt sticky and cold and uncomfortable. Yuck! I hate the rain!

Oakland Half & Full Marathon Elevation

The Geico Gecko!

We met up with my friend Jenny for lunch at The Tipsy Pig in the Marina where I devoured an ahi burger and sweet potato fries. I don't usually order fries much less finish them. Um, what sweet potato fries? Where did they go?  I had just run 9 miles and had 13 lined up for the next morning. That's my excuse.

My New "Got Milk?" Zipper Pull

After lunch we went to my old home away from home Stonestown. Aww 'the mall'. I miss my mall rat days in high school and college when Garley and I seemed to end up there almost daily. Such mall rats. Speaking of Garley we were meeting up with her that night to see the Hunger Games! I read the series over the holidays (3 books in 4 days) and absolutely the books! Garley was a huge fan as well and in proper best friend form bought herself and I matching mockingjay pins which we of course wore during the movie!

Proudly Sporting our Mockingjay Pins

I hate to say it but I think the movie was just so so. There is so much that you get in the books that you miss in the movie. I suppose that is always the case though.

Marathon Maniac Shirt Debut

After the movie it was time for another early bedtime. Luckily the race didn't start until 9:15am (unheard of!) so I got to sleep in until 7am and I still had time to get coffee and bagels before driving back over to Oakland.

My Favorite Breakfast Place - Noah's

It was sprinkling a bit in the morning when I went out to get bagels but I was elated to see that the rain had eased up as we headed east across the bridge. I had my fingers and toes crossed while praying that the rain would stay away. I wasn't too optimistic but in the end guess what? It didn't rain!

Forecast Wasn't Very Positive

Gloomy Day in the Sunset

I haven't been doing any speed workouts lately but of course I was hoping to PR in this race. Come on, I'm always hoping to PR! I don't understand people who aren't. Don't you always want to do your best and then better than your best? I do!

Poor David - Another Early Morning Watching Me Race

Ready to Race! I think...

I started out the race a bit too fast and instead of holding on and continuing to push I started to slow down a bit. Right around mile 6 tragedy struck ... my Walkman died! Ahh! Rookie mistake, I forgot to charge it the night before. Sigh. I never run without music and running in silence is pure torture for me. I'm sure my Walkman dying was the excuse I was looking for to give up on my pace ... and I took it. I slowed down a bit right after mile 6, and my hopes of a PR were instantly dashed. Oh well, not every race is meant to be!

Feeling Strong to Start

Made it Through "The Wall" (Of Fire!)

I'm Sexy and I Know It
(j/k - wow this picture is horrible)

I ended up putting out some nice positive splits in this race which I'm not proud of, and ended up finishing in 1:53:45. I started with a 7:58 first mile which slipped into the high 8:00's for an overall pace of 8:32. Not my best, but not my worst.  I've also learned that I need to A - start doing training runs without music, B - always charge my electronics, and C - start getting back to my speed workouts if I expect to improve on my speed!

Oakland Half Marathon Finisher

After the race we had plans to meet up with a bunch of other San Francisco Marathon Ambassadors who would also be running. I was excited to see old friends again and meet new ones. We all met at the Lake Chalet restaurant for brunch which was about half a mile from the start and finish line for the race. The restaurant was right on the edge of Lake Merrit and had a beautiful view!

SF Ambassador Brunch

The fun for the weekend pretty much ended after brunch. From there we went straight to the Oakland airport where I dropped David off before heading back to my dad's house in San Francisco. Once I got home I showered, packed up the car, reclaimed my dogs and hit the freeway for another 500 miles on the road. Driving alone was a LOT less fun than driving with David. Those dogs really need to work on their conversation skills! Luckily I managed to get home in 8 hours, although I got home so late that I decided to take the next day off from work to catch up on things. Its funny how a little mini-vacation can be so exhausting!

The Nestle Quick Bunny Admiring .. My Medal?

My next race after Oakland was the Carlsbad 5000 which I ran this past weekend (recap coming soon), this weekend I'm running the Hollywood Half Marathon, and then next weekend I'm doing my first distance ride on the bike. On Sunday April 15th I'll be doing the Gran Fondo 60 mile bike tour! I'm excited for the new challenge but not excited about the timing. I've been asked to go to a tradeshow in Vegas at the last minute and don't get back from the show until late Saturday the night before. Hmm, standing in heels and walking all over Vegas for three days. Sounds like great race prep! Oh well, what can you do! Let's hope my training keeps me riding strong!
